The older sister of Felix Mendelssohn, Fanny Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1805–1847) was a remarkable pianist and a composer in her own right. In their youth, Fanny and Felix were inseparable friends; they encouraged each other, collaborated in musical endeavors, and received the same education and training from distinguished tutors. But under later pressure to neglect her talents in favor of her brother’s, Fanny stifled her own career. She married and continued to compose—jprincipally lieder—jand to organize concerts in her home, which became an integral part of the Berlin musical scene.

At 40 years of age Fanny went against the orders of her father and of Felix and published her compositions, which, until recently, have remained virtually unknown.

This book, originally published in France in 1992 by Éditions Belfond and subsequently in Germany by Kindler Verlag, is the first and only authoritative biography of Fanny Mendelssohn and contains a complete list of her published compositions. Françoise Tillard writes passionately about an exceptional artist who left behind 400 works and who could have held her own among the greatest if she had not been prohibited from venturing into the professional world.
